So, as part of homework this week, we were asked to read Edutopia's 10 tips for teaching new media and make a blog post on it. Unfortunately, as the file was an attachment, I can't give you guys a hyperlink so you can follow along :( Hopefully this doesn't get too confusing.
I think this article had good and bad tips. One of the tips I saw as something bad was the use of social networking sites such as twitter and facebook. While twitter and facebook are great tools for marketing, I think its really a stretch to use them in the classroom. Also its hard to monitor who else can see your student's work, and that in itself can be dangerous.
However, I really liked the idea of using blogs. Blogs can be set to private and allow students to do many different things. It also allows them to reflect in an extended setting without the 140 character limit of facebook or twitter. I also like how blogs allow you to post videos and photos.
My favorite tip was probably employing wikis in the classroom. While I have little experience in the classroom, I think it's great to be able to make a classroom wiki that students can access and contribute to. It also helps direct students to classroom resources without having to scour the internet for them.
Overall, I felt this article had good and bad tips, but I definitely will take the idea of using wiki's and blogs into my future teaching settings.
